Unconventional drug smuggling fails in Nome prison

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – The Alaska Bureau of Investigation (ABI) reported that contraband and controlled substances were seized Tuesday from a man incarcerated at the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center in Nome.

The center told ABI that Arthur Kobuk, 27, of Saint Michael, was observed rectally expelling balloons believed to contain narcotics. Kobuk was held in a dry cell, meaning there were no sanitary facilities such as a toilet or shower.

Nome's drug enforcement unit went to the correctional facility and eventually seized a total of nine balloons – containing 19.2 grams of marijuana flowers, 26.8 grams of marijuana concentrate and 6.3 grams of tobacco.

The estimated street value of the controlled substances is $7,180, according to the ABI. Kobuk was charged with misdemeanor involving controlled substances and facilitating smuggling.
