Bail denied for woman accused of murder in Decatur

DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) – A double murder suspect in Decatur was denied bail. Mary Hughes was in court Thursday afternoon, with her mother and a detective testifying.

A Decatur detective told the court about a 911 call that reported a woman hitting an elderly woman in the head with a hammer. The witness followed the suspects' car, and then Hughes was caught up with police.

The detective says that when they arrested Hughes, they found a bloody hammer that was believed to have been used to kill Mimi Marquette.

Investigators also found a backpack in the car containing James Jefferson's identification. This led investigators to believe that Hughes was connected to Jefferson's stabbing murder.

Hughes' mother also testified at the hearing. She said Hughes had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
