Trump repeats false claims about Ohio towns after Biden says attacks on Haitian immigrants have ‘no place in America’ – live | US elections 2024

Biden: Attacks on Haitian immigrants have “no place in America”

Joe Biden hosted a celebration of black excellence at the White House in the afternoon, where he explicitly condemned the attacks on Haitian immigrants in Ohio, which were carried out by Donald Trump and his allies.

The president described Haitians in America as a “community that is currently under attack in our country,” which he said was “simply wrong.”

“There is no place for this in America. What he is doing has to stop. It has to stop,” Biden said, without mentioning Trump's name.

The former president and his running mate, the Senator from Ohio JD Vancehave claimed that Haitians have eaten pets in the city of Springfield, which local authorities say is not true.

Vance also blamed the entire community for the death of a child who died in a car accident involving a Haitian driver, prompting the boy’s father to publicly ask that the tragedy not be exploited for “political purposes”:

Important events

Donald Trump's press conference has ended, but before that the former president wanted to talk about what he could do for California if he wins the election.

Trump turned it into a campaign appearance for Golden State voters, who have not supported a Republican presidential candidate since then. George H.W. Bush was on the ballot paper in 1988:

Vote for me, California. I'll give you security. I'll give you a great border, and I'll give you more water than almost anyone else has.

Note the reference to water, a very important issue in this western state, which is also the most populous in the country:

Trump was again asked about his relationship with Laura Loomer and what he believes is her contribution to his campaign.

Loomer spread conspiracy theories about the September 11 attacks and posted racist messages on social media. Trump nevertheless said:

She brings a spirit to us that a lot of people have. We have very spirited people. And, to be fair, she hates to see what's happened to the country.

Trump announces “major deportations” from Ohio city if elected

Donald Trump He then threatened “mass deportations” in Springfield, Ohio, home to a large Haitian community that he and his allies have demonized in recent days.

“I can say this: We're going to do major deportations from Springfield, Ohio, major deportations. We're going to get these people out,” Trump said.

Due to problems in their home country, Haitians are currently protected from deportation under the Department of Homeland Security's Temporary Protected Status until February 3, 2026.

Trump says he has no control over conspiracy theorist Loomer amid criticism over his connection

Donald Trump was named after his connection to Laura Loomerthe right-wing conspiracy theorist who was recently spotted with him on the campaign trail, leading to complaints from some Republicans who see her as a bad influence.

“Laura is a supporter, just like a lot of other people are supporters, and she's a supporter of mine. She speaks very positively about the campaign,” Trump said.

“I have no control over Laura. Laura has to say what she wants. She is a free spirit.”

Here's more about the outrage over Loomer's involvement in the Trump campaign:

After almost an hour of speaking, Donald Trump answered his first question.

It was difficult to understand what was being asked, but it appeared to be Republican criticism of his performance during the debate.

Trump insisted he did a good job: “Most of my Republican allies said I did great in the debate.”

Although he did not repeat his baseless claim about eating pets, Donald Trump made a point of attacking the Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio.

“In Springfield, Ohio, 20,000 illegal Haitian migrants invaded a city of 58,000 and destroyed the way of life,” Trump said, neglecting to mention that Haitians are protected from deportation and are allowed to apply for work permits under a government policy that applies to migrants from unstable countries.

“People don't like to talk about it because even the city doesn't like to talk about it, it sounds so bad for the city. They live there. They are proud. They love the city. For years it was a great place, sure.”

The Governor of Ohio, Mike DeWinea Republican who supports Trump said the migrants have filled jobs where workers were needed and he has heard positive things about them from employers.

This “press conference” has now lasted well over half an hour, and Trump still hasn’t answered a single question.

Donald Trump's campaign team has announced this as a press conference, but he has not yet answered any questions from the reporters present.

In the last 15 minutes he attacked Kamala Harriswhom he called “Comrade Kamala” because of her achievements as San Francisco District Attorney, a position she held from 2004 to 2011.

Trump, who speaks slowly and clearly but lacks enthusiasm, unsurprisingly also claimed victory in Tuesday's debate with the Vice President and criticized the ABC News moderators.

Here's a look back at Harris' tenure as San Francisco's top prosecutor and California's attorney general in 2019:

Biden also used the term “black jobs,” seemingly by chance, when addressing attendees at a White House event celebrating the achievements of African Americans.

Donald Trump first used the offensive term in his June debate against Biden, in which the president performed so poorly that he eventually gave up his candidacy for a second term.

“In just three and a half years, we have created just over two million new jobs for black Americans,” the president said, drawing subdued laughter from the crowd.

“By the way,” said Biden, seeming to recover, “the next position that can be filled by a black man is that of President of the United States of America.” The crowd cheered heartily.

Biden has made similar verbal slip-ups throughout his presidency:

For the Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio, the unsubstantiated allegations by Donald Trump and his allies that they eat pets have had serious consequences, the Haitian Times reported.

The New York-based publication, which focuses on reporting on the Caribbean nation and its diaspora in the United States, reported that Haitians in Springfield have been victims of vandalism on their cars and have faced intimidation since Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vanceaccused them of eating pets as part of their campaign to convince voters that immigrants are dangerous. Local officials in Springfield have said the candidates' claims are untrue.

Here's more in the Haitian Times:

The morning after former President Donald Trump repeated racist claims about Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, some Haitian families kept their children home from school for their safety, according to a local activist. Those who allowed their children to go did so with heavy hearts.

“She [my niece] was scared, but I told her to go and God would protect her,” said a Haitian woman who asked not to be named publicly for fear of reprisals.

“We are all victims this morning,” said the woman, who moved to Springfield six years ago. “They are attacking us in every way they can.”

Aside from the anguish caused by Tuesday night's debate, the woman also said her cars were vandalized twice in the middle of the night. One morning she woke up to see broken windows and another morning she found acid thrown on her car. She has installed cameras in her driveway and has tried in vain to report the incidents to the police.

“I'm going to have to move because this area is no longer good for me,” she said. “I can't even leave my house to go to Walmart. I'm worried and scared.”

The accounts of the Haitian families, released to The Haitian Times on condition of confidentiality, are the latest stories of intimidation, bullying and attacks at a time when anti-Haitian sentiment has gone viral.
