Driver who killed eighth-grader on Grand Island is a minor

The driver who struck and killed a Grand Island middle school student Wednesday night was a minor, the Erie County Sheriff's Office said Friday.

The driver also showed no signs of impairment, a spokesman for the sheriff's office said in an email.

A sheriff's office spokesman said that due to the ongoing investigation and the driver's age, there would be no further information on Friday about the driver, who has not been charged.

Leah Mayer, an eighth-grader at Veronica E. Connor Middle School, was hit on South Parkway near Broadway in Grand Island around 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to Grand Island School Superintendent Brian Graham.

“Leah was selfless, a loyal friend and a constant source of positivity,” Graham said in a statement posted on Facebook Thursday afternoon. “Her energy seemed to radiate from within and she was known as a 'voice' for others, always ready to stand up and support those around her. Her presence will be greatly missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her.”

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, the sheriff's office said.
