Crime in Darien up so far this year: Statistics

DARIEN, IL – Darien has seen a sharp increase in thefts so far this year.

According to a police department report, local police received 118 reports so far this year through August, compared to 70 at the same time last year. In 2020, the number at this time was 133.

There were no such increases in other categories of property crime. The number of burglaries during the same period this year was 10, the same as last year.

Overall, the number of property crimes increased by 14 percent.

As for violent crime, 90 incidents were reported in August, compared to 84 at the same time last year. In 2020, the number was 58 at this time.

The largest category of violence was physical assault – 87 in August, compared to 79 at the same time in 2023.

In the report, Police Chief Greg Thomas said further investigation was needed to determine factors that may have influenced the increase.
