Hueytown man found guilty of plotting to murder federal prosecutor

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – A 32-year-old Hueytown man has been found guilty of threatening to murder and soliciting the murder of a federal prosecutor, as well as making false statements to a federal agent.

Court records and evidence show that Michael Roman Black was in prison at Hoover in February 2023 after the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Alabama filed charges against him. While in custody, Black told another inmate about his plan to have two associates “outside” murder one of the federal prosecutors working on his case. Black shared specific details about who he planned to contact and that he planned to have them shoot the prosecutor in her car.

Authorities learned of the threat and were able to foil the assassination plot. When questioned by federal agents, Black made false statements to cover up his plan.

He was indicted by a grand jury in federal court in Birmingham in March 2023.

“Making threats against a prosecutor or law enforcement officer is a serious offense and a direct attack on our justice system,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Kevin Davidson. “I am grateful for the diligent work of law enforcement in identifying and thwarting this plot to take the life of a public servant who was simply seeking justice for the people of the United States.”

Black could face up to ten years in federal prison for threatening to kill a federal official, up to twenty years for solicitation of murder, and up to five years for making false statements to a federal agent.

His verdict will be announced on December 12.
