County officials are working to address food shortages, and funding from the American Rescue Plan Act — $1 million, to be exact — is making it possible.

As of September 6, 10 nonprofits have received a total of just over $350,000 through the grant program; applications are still open.

“Whatever it means to each partner, as long as they use the funds to address food insecurity, that's fine with us,” Felicia Hopson, director of Burlington County government, told New Jersey 101.5.

The money can be used to purchase food, new storage facilities, shopping bags, a refrigerator and more.

It's difficult to collect quantitative data on this topic, so Hopson said the focus has been more on quality. “So we have to look at this from a holistic perspective and say, OK, these people are still coming. Some of them are core families, some of them are not. But if they're still coming, then there is actually still a gap in food insecurity in Burlington County,” Hopson said.

What’s next for the county?

Hopson recognizes that support is still needed and says it is critical to continue funding these nonprofit partnerships so that help is readily available at a moment's notice.
