A look at the Wild Card standings: Mets in third place

On Thursdays for the rest of the season, we will do a Wild Card update and look at how the Mets and how their competitors have fared since the last check-in.

The Mets are 4-2 in their last six games and have gone from a half-game behind the Wild Card to a game ahead of the Braves for third place. They did this by winning series against the Reds and Blue Jays, and the other teams in the race not playing nearly as well as the Mets. With two series against the Phillies in the next ten days, the Mets will have to trust that the other teams will keep fighting, even if the Mets can get good results against those sandwich-eating bastards. Let's see how the other teams played this week.

Arizona Diamondbacks – First place, +2.0 games

The Diamondbacks went 3-3 last week, losing three straight games to the Giants and Astros, then winning three straight games against the Astros and Rangers. With two series against the Brewers starting tomorrow and a trip to Colorado in between, Arizona will look to make up ground in the Wild Card standings, although Milwaukee is no easy team.

San Diego Padres – Second place, +1.5 games

The Padres are 2-4 this week, losing two of three games to the Giants, losing the finale to the Tigers and splitting a two-game series with the Mariners. Of all the teams currently on the heat, the Padres seem to be struggling the most, which is surprising considering the return of Fernando Tatis Jr. to their lineup. This weekend, the Padres face the Giants again and will hopefully continue to battle against their rivals from the north.

Atlanta Braves – 1.0 games out of position

The Braves went 3-4 last week, losing one game each to the Rockies, Blue Jays, Reds and Nationals in one of the strangest weeks of schedule in recent memory. This weekend they face the Dodgers and will hopefully be crushed by Ohtani and Co.
