Police officer in Tyreek Hill incident was suspended six times during his career and honored for his professionalism

Before the Miami Dolphins’ 20-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, wide receiver Tyreek Hill was arrested by the Miami-Dade Police Department. Several officers were involved in Hill's arrest, but the six-time All-Pro was particularly frustrated with the actions of Officer Danny Torres.

On Friday: Andy Slater from FOX Sports reported that in his 27-year career with the police, Torres “has received a total of six suspensions, some of which have lasted up to 20 days.”

However, Slater also noted that the Miami-Dade Police Department has “praised Torres numerous times throughout his career for his safe driving and dedication to duty” and will present him with a 2023 award for professionalism.

On Sunday, Torres forcibly dragged Hill out of his car after he surrendered his license and then rolled up his window, as seen in body camera footage of the incident. Officers had threatened Hill to roll it back down or they would get him out of the car themselves. Hill said CNN on Monday that he had rolled his window back up because he did not want to make a scene.

After getting Hill out of the car, Torres handcuffed him while kneeling on his back. About a minute later, Torres forced Hill to the ground again after instructing him to sit on the sidewalk.

Hill's teammate, Calais Campbell arrived at the scene in handcuffs. Torres approached him and ordered him to leave. After a brief back and forth, Torres handcuffed Campbell as well.

Officers took Campbell into custody for “disobeying a direct order,” he said after the game. Jonnu Smith was also there and was repeatedly ordered by the police to get in his car and drive away. Torres threatened to give him a ticket.

Miami-Dade police placed Torres on leave while the incident was investigated. On Tuesday, Hill's attorney Julius Collins released a statement on behalf of his client “demanding” that the administrative officer be “terminated effective immediately.”

“Every action of a law enforcement officer is subject to standard procedures,” says the statement by Marcel Louis-Jacques von ESPN“We believe the officer's use of force was excessive, escalating and reckless. We demand the officer's immediate dismissal.”

On Wednesday, Tyreek Hill repeated his lawyer's statement during a press conference.

“Gone. Gone. Gone. Gone. Gone. Gone. He's got to go, man,” Hill said. “At that moment, not only did he mistreat me, he disrespected my teammates. He said some crazy words about them and they didn't even do anything. Like, what did they do to you? They're just walking on the sidewalk. He's got to go, man.”
