Why this crime expert says the drive-by shooting in Midlothian was 'not an accident'

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Virginia – Residents of a Watermill community in Midlothian are expressing concern following a drive-by shooting in the early morning hours of Sept. 7.

Six days have passed since the shooting and there are still no answers as to who was involved.

“If I'm an officer investigating the case, I'm going to look at who was in the apartment,” said crime expert and former police captain Steve Neal.

At 3:20 a.m. on a Saturday morning, the normal tranquility of the neighborhood was interrupted by gunshots in the 1700 block of Rose Mill Circle, according to Chesterfield police.

Shots were fired at an occupied home, but no one was injured. However, several bullets were found at the end of a driveway.

“When they get there, they're going to want to know what kind of weapon was used – what kind of shots were fired and, of course, if there was any video from the area or if there was a witness who happened to see a car leaving the area. Obviously, they're trying to find evidence to support the case.”

At the heart of the case is the question of who lives at the address of the house.

Some neighbors CBS 6's Jon Burkett spoke to behind closed doors said they had loaded up their car for a drive shortly after the shooting and the drive-by accident left them with an uneasy feeling.

Neal believes it was not a random attack.

“When there is a drive-by shooting, it is usually not an accident. It is a targeted event and someone chose that location for a reason.”

Police are still investigating the drive-by shooting. If you have any information, you are asked to call the anonymous tip line at 804-748-0660.
