Man flees from accident and is found on North Main Street in Cumbies, police say

CONCORD, NH — A North End patrol officer spotted a crash on North Main Street near Interstate 393 around 10:45 p.m. Thursday night.

The vehicle, a Scion coupe, belonged to a Center Barnstead man. The coupe sustained front-end damage after driving off I-393 into the curb and apparently attempting to turn south onto North Main Street. The officer said parts of the car were scattered in the area and no driver was visible. The airbags deployed, but it appeared there was no blood in the vehicle, a second officer said.

Another officer saw a man wandering around the area near the Concord Homeless Resource Center. Another officer came to assist and they attempted to locate the man.

A third officer who knew the driver provided a description and a fourth officer reported finding someone in another section of North Main Street. They also stated that the driver had been with a woman during a previous encounter.

The man near the resource was not involved in the incident, an official said.

The dispatcher began calling taxi drivers to ask if they had picked up anyone in the area, but according to the radio messages, they had not.

At around 11:30 p.m., police encountered the woman from the previous incident. She claimed she was driving the coupe before it crashed. However, according to the dispatch center, a witness stated that a man at the scene of the accident was the driver. The witness said there was no woman with him.

Police then went to Cumbies after a store employee called police to report a man who had entered the store but, upon seeing officers outside, quickly fled. Police went to the store and found the owner of the coupe in the parking lot.
