Bayern coach Vincent Kompany explains viral outbreak from Burnley documentary

Vincent Kompany is used to being in the spotlight – not only as a player during his long career at Manchester City and elsewhere, but also as a coach.

Before his arrival at Bayern Munich, a viral dressing room video was reportedly circulating in the Bayern squad, based on a documentary from his time at Anderlecht.

Now it's another viral video from last season, when Kompany was at Burnley – and again a documentary crew was on hand to capture a tirade against Icelandic midfielder Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson.

Guðmundsson announced his departure from Burnley before Kompany's move to Bayern was completed.

The head coach of FC Bayern was asked about this in an interview with the Belgian broadcaster DH les Sports + this week – recorded by @iMiaSanMia:

Recently a video went viral of you shouting and insulting Gudmundsson in Burnley.

Here is the clip first…

Kompany freaks out, reprimanding the player for his “moaning” and saying his body language is like excrement. At one point, Kompany starts to walk away, then turns around and shouts: “It’s [expletive]- Life or death! [Expletive]-ing play!” – to which Gudmundsson replies: “I [expletive]-ing, you know that!”

Now that the dust has settled, Kompany was able to laugh about the incident and detail the story behind it.

“I explained it to him very calmly,” said the 38-year-old in an interview. “This is actually the first time this year at Bayern that I'm not filming my entire season for a documentary with a camera team. It was the same at Anderlecht and Burnley. When every speech and every training session is filmed, there are always moments like this.”

“But the message of all this is that we give our lives for our club. If the club is relegated, people lose their jobs. We have a responsibility. We should never get into a situation where we lack attention. It wasn't about a bad pass or a bad tactical decision, but about basic things: running and fighting for each other. He had broken the basic principles.”

So, quit Bayern? Then intensity and absolute commitment are required. Kompany may be a newcomer to the coaching ranks, but he doesn't do things by halves.
