The family of a Massachusetts State Police candidate who authorities say was seriously injured and died during an exercise at the academy is outraged.

Enrique Delgado, 25, a recruit at the State Police Academy in Braintree, died after a medical crisis during a training exercise.

Now his family is wondering how he could have suffered such serious injuries, including severe brain trauma, during training.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, Enrique Delgado-Garcia died as a result of an injury sustained during a defensive tactics exercise, but his family members are demanding an explanation for his fatal injuries.

Massachusetts State Police said in a statement that he suffered a medical emergency during defensive tactics training and was unresponsive.

He was later taken to hospital where he died.

Delgado's family said their relative suffered a broken neck, missing teeth and severe brain damage. They are now demanding accountability and explanations for what happened within the walls of the academy.

The family of Enrique Delgado Garcia said the 25-year-old Massachusetts State Police cadet, who authorities said was injured during a training exercise at the police department's academy, died from complications of his injuries, which included a broken neck and missing teeth.

“I am ashamed of MSP and I think they need to investigate this thoroughly and justice needs to be done because the way they are treating these soldiers is not right,” said a friend of Delgado. “If my friend could end up like this, anyone's son or daughter could.”

State police offered their support to Delgado's family and called his death a heartbreaking loss.

Governor Maura Healey issued a statement on the recruit's death.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Enrique Delgado-Garcia, a Massachusetts State Police intern who was dedicated to protecting the people of Massachusetts. He was a beloved member of his academy class, known for his compassion and dedication to service. This is a devastating time for all who knew and loved him, and we hold Enrique's family and his State Police community in our hearts.”
