Aston Villa vs Everton: Premier League – live | Premier League

Important events

Current status: Following Liverpool's surprise home defeat to Nottingham Forest this afternoon, a win tonight would see Aston Villa level on points with Arne Slot's side, who currently lie second in the table, three points behind Manchester City. A win for Everton would take them from the bottom of the table to a dizzying 15th.

Sean Dyche: “It’s my responsibility”

Ahead of today's game, the Everton manager was asked about his side's collapse in their last game against Bournemouth, where they lost 3-2 despite leading by two goals after 87 minutes.

“We are all disappointed about it and it is of course my responsibility,” he said. “I think the players have learned in the 20 months here how to deal with these situations. On this day we obviously did not manage to do that. We did not do what was necessary to get through the game and we have to keep learning from that.”

“The game is never over. How we handle it is another reminder. We have a group of players mature enough to know how to hang on at this stage of the game and we just didn't do that.”

These teams: In a selection that will surely have travelling fans rolling their eyes, Sean Dyche makes just one change to the starting XI against Bournemouth due to injuries, with Ashley Young moving up to right-back for Seamus Coleman.

Unai Emery also makes a change to the team that beat Leicester City last time out: Jacob Ramsey comes in for the injury-plagued Leon Bailey.

Early team news

Leon Bailey (hamstring) and Matty Cash (hamstring) are both out for Villa, who will be looking forward to the return of Jaden Philogene and Dieigo Carlos from injury. Tyrone Mings is back in full training after recovering from the knee injury that kept him out of action for over a year and it would not be a huge surprise to see him in the squad for tonight's game.

Orel Malanga is available for Everton after joining from Lyon on the final day of his loan spell, but Armando Broja, who joined on loan from Chelsea on the same day, is out through injury. Everton defenders Jarrad Brantwaithe and Nathan Patterson have both not played for Everton this season and remain injured. Seamus Coleman is doubtful after sustaining an injury while playing for the Republic of Ireland.

Aston Villa vs Everton

Premier League: Without a single Premier League point to their name, and after their team's rather extraordinary defilement in their last game, Everton fans have had two weeks to ponder how Sean Dyche and his players snatched a morale-sapping defeat from a seemingly easy win against Bournemouth.

They travel to Aston Villa, whose management have angered fans with the recent announcement that tickets to their club's Champions League matches this season will be prohibitively expensive for many season ticket holders who want to see their team play in Europe's top competition for the first time in 30 years.

With a trip to Switzerland to face Young Boys on Tuesday, Unai Emery will have to ensure his players are focused on the more mundane domestic tasks, while Dyche will have to try and get his players off the pitch to turn around a season that has been almost disastrous for Everton so far. Kick-off is at 5.30pm, but in the meantime we have team updates and more information.
