Oregon vs. Oregon State – Football game prediction, picks, spread, odds, where to watch, TV channel, live stream

One of the oldest rivalries in college football takes on a whole new twist when No. 9 Oregon and Oregon State meet as non-conference opponents in Corvallis, Oregon on Saturday.

Oregon and Oregon State have played each other 127 times, but the 128th meeting will be the first as non-conference opponents since 1963. The early-season meeting is also new. The Ducks and Beavers have always played in November or December since 1945 and never in September. Oregon has a 68-49-10 record overall, including a 13-3 streak in the last 16 meetings, but Ducks coach Dan Lanning has just a 1-1 record in the rivalry after a 38-34 loss in Corvallis two years ago.

Former Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith contributed to that 2022 win and also the 2020 victory before taking the job at Michigan State in the offseason. The Beavers promoted defensive coordinator Trent Bray to replace Smith, and now in his 10th season with the program, the former Oregon State linebacker has led his alma mater to a 2-0 start to 2024.

So, this is the first year in 60 years that Oregon and Oregon State will meet as non-conference opponents, and the first edition of the rivalry that will feature Dan Lanning and Trent Bray on the sidelines. The series may date back to 1894, but this meeting in Corvallis marks the beginning of a brand new era in this in-state rivalry.

Oregon vs. Oregon State: What you need to know

Dillon Gabriel keeps it clean: Just like Bo Nix before him, Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel has managed to keep the air clear. Gabriel has caught 59 of 70 passes so far in 2024, ranking third in the nation with an 84.3% completion rate. He also leads the Big Ten, ranking 13th in the nation with 623 passing yards on the season. The Ducks' quarterback has spread the ball around, with five different pass receivers totaling at least six pass catches and 70 yards on the season.

The Beavers have a solid attack: Jam Griffin and Anthony Hankerson both average over 100 yards per game. Griffin ranks 12th nationally with 124.5 yards per game and Hankerson ranks 17th with an average of 113 yards. Oregon State is the only program in the country to boast two players in the top 20 FBS rushing yards per game this early in the season. This is a continuation of the success the Beavers have found by building their offense around a strong running game and solid play at the line of scrimmage.

A statement game for the pollsters: Although Oregon started the season 2-0, the Ducks have fallen in the AP Top 25 poll after failing to meet voters' expectations. The Ducks began the season ranked No. 3, but fell four spots to No. 7 after a 24-14 win over FCS Idaho. After narrowly edging past Boise State in the late-night list in Week 2, voters reshuffled the top 10, knocking Oregon back two more spots to No. 9. Now, on the road for the first time all season and against an old rival that could cause some problems, Oregon has a chance to reverse that move with a decisive win.

Oregon vs. Oregon State Prediction, Tips

Oregon isn't in top form yet, but the issues that have prevented the Ducks from meeting expectations are solvable. The offensive line's woes seemed to calm down during the Boise State game thanks to a mid-game personnel shakeup. If Oregon can avoid the mental errors (particularly penalties) that have cropped up over the past two weeks, it won't be long before all the talented pieces fall into place. I expect these away conditions to bring out the best in Dan Lanning's squad and Oregon's roles. Selection: Oregon -16.5
