Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction tried to fight Dave Navarro on stage

In a headline most of us probably wouldn't have expected today, it appears that Perry Farrell picked a fight with Dave Navarro during a Jane's Addiction show in Boston on Friday the 13th. For some reason, that makes me giggle.

That's probably because it's like your two old uncles arguing. So really, just find a seat and sit down. Farrell, who was rumored to have been drunk and doing a crossfade during the performance, literally shoulder-butted Navarro for no reason before jumping in his face and berating him thoroughly. Considering the attack came out of nowhere, Navarro was understandably confused by the whole situation and tried to keep playing while Farrell continued to berate him. Farrell wouldn't stop, which caused Navarro to stop playing and shove him off, after which Farrell tried—and failed—to hit him. The band's crew restrained Farrell and dragged him off the stage before canceling the rest of the concert. How embarrassing.

Perry Farrell's wife Etty described the event from her perspective as “a first-hand account of what happened on stage.” Her post on Instagram was long but informative and also included a full video of the altercation.

“There was obviously a lot of tension and animosity between the members… the magic that made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite was ignited.

“Perry's frustration grew from night to night. He felt that the volume on stage was extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band. Perry suffered from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when the audience in the front row started complaining to Perry and yelling at him that the band was too loud and they couldn't hear him, Perry freaked out.

“The band started playing 'Ocean' before Perry was ready and did the countdown. The volume on stage was so loud at this point that Perry couldn't hear anything because of the roar and vibration of the instruments, and by the end of the song he was no longer singing, just screaming to be heard.”

“While Dave Perry kept his distance to de-escalate the situation, [roadie] Dan rushed to de-escalate the situation by restraining Perry. Dave walked away to pick up his guitar. Eric approached Perry in the dark behind Dan, put him in a headlock and punched him three times in the stomach. Kevin, a crew member with long hair, pulled Eric away. Then Eric calmly walked to the front of the stage to apologize to the audience for ending the show early.

“Dave still looked good and cool in the middle of the fight,” Etty added. “Perry was a crazy beast for the next half hour – he finally didn't calm down, he just broke down and cried and cried. Eric, well, either he didn't understand what decalization meant or he took advantage of the situation and gave Perry some unfair punches.”

Farrell has caused quite a stir in his recent performances on stage, looking sloppy and all around chaotic. Hopefully he's OK, but admittedly this face-to-face violence is pretty damn entertaining.
