The University of Colorado Boulder announced Friday that Provost Russell Moore is stepping down after 14 years in the position.

Moore will continue in his role until Chancellor Justin Schwartz appoints a new provost following a nationwide search.

“The timing of this move provides Chancellor Schwartz with the opportunity to seek new academic leadership and shape the academic mission consistent with his goals for CU Boulder,” Moore said in a press release.

The search for Moore's successor will begin nationwide and the university will announce more information on the search process in the coming weeks.

“Russ Moore led CU Boulder's academic mission through a period of bold change and redefinition,” Schwartz said in the release. “What he accomplished is significant, and the way he accomplished it is even more significant: by listening, committing to action and anchoring the mission in our best values. On behalf of our entire campus community, we are grateful for Russ' service and for all he accomplished.”

Moore was appointed provost in 2010 by former chancellor Phil DiStefano. He earns $409,121 per year, according to salary data for fiscal year 2024. As provost and associate chancellor for academic affairs, Moore is the university's top academic official and oversees all research, teaching, and the student and faculty experience at the university, according to the University of Materials Science.

Moore served as Vice Chancellor for Research from 2006 to 2009. He also served as Chair of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology (now Integrative Physiology) and Professor.

Moore is the longest-serving provost at CU Boulder and the longest continuously serving provost among the institutions in CU Boulder's peer group, the Association of American Universities.
