Man arrested in connection with accidental shooting of 2-year-old by 8-year-old

TEXARKANA, Arkansas (KSLA) – The owner of a gun has been arrested after an 8-year-old child accidentally shot and killed a 2-year-old child in Texarkana, Arkansas.

On September 14 at 8:11 a.m., the Texarkana Texas Police Department (TTPD) was called to Wadley Hospital to respond to a 2-year-old child who was admitted with a gunshot wound to the leg. The teen's mother said her other 8-year-old child found the firearm and accidentally shot the sibling while at home in Texarkana, Arkansas.

Officers from the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department (TAPD) responded immediately and began an investigation. The mother reported that she and the injured child were dropped off at the hospital by her partner, Breydan Ybarra. Ybarra then took the 8-year-old sibling and another 5-year-old child to the children's grandmother in Nash, Texas.

The injured child was flown to a hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Ybarra was contacted by officers when he returned to the apartment. Officers checked the apartment to make sure there were no other victims inside.

A review of the arrest warrants revealed that Ybarra was a convicted felon.

Ybarra was arrested on charges of possession of a firearm by a certain person and three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, all of which were felonies.

A search warrant was executed for the house and the vehicle.

The child's condition is said to be stable.
