Five defensive takeaways in 62-0 win over Ball State

The Miami Hurricanes defense dominated Ball State on Saturday night, posting a shutout in a 62-0 win at Hard Rock Stadium.

Ball State managed just 115 total yards of offense on Saturday and never made it into the red zone during the game. The Cardinals averaged just 2.2 yards per play on the day and converted just 1 of 12 third-down opportunities.

It was Miami's first shutout since beating Central Connecticut State 69-0 in 2021. It was UM's first shutout against an FBS-level team since beating Duke 48-0 in 2020.

The Hurricanes won the coin toss and moved to the second half, so the defense started the play on the field. Ball State picked up a first down and took the ball to the midfield, but their advance was interrupted by a sack by defensive tackle Simeon Barrow on a 3rd-and-3 situation.

UM led 10-0 after the first quarter and limited Ball State to 47 yards, including -5 rushing yards. Bissainthe led the Hurricanes with four tackles in the first quarter of play.

UM's defense was on fire late in the first half. Baron deflected a ball as it hit the Ball State quarterback. The errant pass was intercepted by Alston, giving the Hurricanes offense a short field and another touchdown.

UM led 31-0 at halftime, with Ball State managing just 90 total yards and seven first downs. The Hurricanes limited Ball State to -4 rushing yards in the first half. The Cardinals averaged just 2.6 yards per play.

Bissainthe led the Hurricanes with five tackles in the first half, while Barrow and Baron each had 1.5 tackles for loss. Alston totaled one sack and one interception in the first half.

Miami's defense remained goalless in the third quarter of the game and the Hurricanes began to add more depth to the game in the fourth quarter.
