Bonita man pleads guilty to trading drugs for sex – NBC 7 San Diego

A Bonita man who prosecutors say gave a 15-year-old girl fentanyl pills in exchange for sex, with the drugs ultimately causing the girl's fatal overdose, pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court in San Diego.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, 30-year-old Marcus Ray Chavez gave the girl counterfeit pills containing fentanyl at least four times between September and November 2022.

Prosecutors believe the teenager died on November 12, 2022 from an overdose of the pills Chavez gave her.

In his confessions to the charges of sex trafficking of minors and distribution of fentanyl resulting in death, he admitted that he knew the girl was a minor.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said a guilty plea to distributing fentanyl resulting in death would carry a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison.

In a statement, San Diego U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath said: “This heartbreaking case highlights the devastating impact of fentanyl. For his role as a dealer in this tragedy, the defendant will spend at least the next 20 years of his life in prison.”
