Cougars face Wyoming on the road – Deseret News

The Deseret News will be covering Saturday's game between BYU and Wyoming live. Check back for updates throughout the game.

Fourth quarter

13:22 – In the midst of the loss, the Cougars forced their first turnover of the game.

Wyoming quarterback Evan Svoboda threw a deep ball down the sideline into double coverage, where the ball fell into the hands of the onrushing Evan Johnson and was intercepted. BYU 34, Wyoming 7.

This was the first interception of Johnson's career, allowing BYU to get the ball back at its own 30-yard line.

The Cougars defense has now allowed just 151 yards and surrendered a tiny 2.8 yards per play.

Third quarter

BYU 34, Wyoming 7

0:02 – This game has officially broken through.

Darius Lassiter intercepted a 20-yard pass from running back Jake Retzlaff and stretched across the goal line for BYU's fourth touchdown of the night. BYU 34, Wyoming 7.

Retzlaff is quickly approaching the 300-yard mark with his passing, with 291 yards and three touchdowns. He also added another 62 rushing yards on six carries.

9:42 – Another field goal by Will Ferrin gives the Cougars a 20-point lead. BYU 27, Wyoming 7.

BYU covered 45 yards before Ferrin's 37-yard kick, with Chase Roberts pushing the Cougars forward with a spectacular catch, securing over 100 receiving yards on the night.

14:45 – For the first time in a decade, BYU returned a kick for a touchdown.

Keelan Marion opened the second half by carrying the kickoff from one end zone to the other and scoring a 100-yard return touchdown. BYU 24, Wyoming 7.

This special teams blast was the first such play by a Cougar since Adam Hine against Virginia in 2014 and the first on the road since 1998.

Halftime

BYU 17, Wyoming 7

The Cougars lead by two points in Laramie, but their lead could be even bigger if they had avoided some missed opportunities.

Jake Retzlaff has led BYU's offense to 248 yards so far, but he has thrown one interception in the red zone and has come close to being intercepted on three other occasions. The Cougars are also 0-5 on third downs, having failed to convert their last 16 attempts dating back to last week against SMU.

However, BYU is still averaging 6.6 yards per play—including 4.3 yards per carry, despite limited running back capacity—and, most importantly, is in contention to win.

The Cougars defense continued to perform solidly this season, allowing just 100 total yards before halftime and forcing six punts from Wyoming.

BYU gets the second half kickoff as Retzlaff looks for a sharper and more consistent performance at quarterback in the final 30 minutes of the game.

Second quarter

BYU 17, Wyoming 7.

0:45 – A 49-yard field goal by Will Ferrin makes the game two points ahead again. BYU 17, Wyoming 7.

5:11 — The Cowboys strike back.

Wyoming quarterback Evan Svoboda scored a 2-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to just seven points. BYU 14, Wyoming 7.

9:12 — For the first time in 700 days, Kody Epps found the end zone.

The redshirt junior receiver scored his first touchdown since October 2022 on a 3-yard pass from Retzlaff. BYU 14, Wyoming 0.

Epps' goal capped a nine-play, 73-yard drive for the Cougars, who have already rushed for 197 yards tonight.

Retzlaff now has 14 of 20 passes for 148 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and a rating of 155.2.

13:35 — Jay Hill’s defense continues to impress.

In Wyoming's four attacks so far, the Cougars have allowed only 41 yards and one first down. The Cowboys have had to punt on each of their attacks. BYU 7, Wyoming 0.

First quarter

BYU 7, Wyoming 0

5:58 — The Cougars have shed first blood.

Jake Retzlaff played a pass to tight end Keanu Hill on a short route, but since there were no Cowboys nearby, the tight end jogged 20 yards into the end zone unchallenged and scored the touchdown. BYU 7, Wyoming 0.

Hill, who had only two pass catches the season before moving to Laramie, now has three tonight for 36 yards.

The touchdown pass is Retzlaff's fifth in 2024 and the eighth of his BYU career.

10:35 – It was a promising ride until it wasn’t anymore.

After BYU gained 60 yards on its first possession of the night, quarterback Jake Retzlaff's pass was intercepted by Wrook Brown just short of the goal line. BYU 0, Wyoming 0.

The pass came from 20 yards and was intended for Kody Epps, but he was completely covered by Brown.

The Cowboys will take over at their own one-yard line after Retzlaff's fourth turnover of the season.
