Canelo Alvarez destroys the record of his strongest rival: “He beat a good fighter”

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fights Edgar Berlanga this weekend, but cannot avoid questions about Terence Crawford and David Benavidez.

The Mexican will defend three of the four major super middleweight belts after being stripped of one earlier this year, but many in the sport believe Benavidez or Crawford should be in the other corner.

Despite pressure from fans and the media, Canelo remained calm about the two fights, always stressing that he would consider them if the money was right, but insisting that they would do nothing to help his reputation.

It seems he feels this especially with Crawford, who recently joined Canelo in the club of world champions in four weight classes. Previously, the American had a career-defining victory over Errol Spence Jr. – the only opponent Canelo believes is worth mentioning with his 40-fight record, via TMZ.

“I always say I respect Terence Crawford. He's a very talented fighter. But he's just a big fight. If you look at his record, he's only beaten one good fighter – Errol Spence. Other than that, I don't think he's beaten another great fighter like Spence. He did a really good job on Spence, it almost looked easy. I knew Terence Crawford was a great fighter.”

Crawford has been champion at lightweight, super lightweight, welterweight and now super welterweight, with the middle two divisions being undisputed winners. On his way to the top of the pound-for-pound list, he beat the likes of Shawn Porter, Kell Brook, Julius Indongo, Viktor Postol and Ricky Burns. None of them particularly impress Canelo.

Nevertheless, he said in the interview that he was still open to the fight, even if he was somewhat indifferent to the matter.

“In boxing you never know, we will see in the future.”

Many in the sport believe that if Crawford fails to fight Canelo, his career will end.
