FORT LAUDERDALE – Three people died and another was hospitalized after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 595 in Broward County early Saturday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol told CBS News Miami that the fatalities included a 27-year-old man and two women, ages 19 and 24. A 63-year-old man was also involved in the crash, but the extent of his injuries was not disclosed.

Shortly after 3:55 a.m., a BMW AG and a Hyundai Accent were traveling eastbound on I-595 in the third general purpose lane just west of Interstate 95.

According to FHP, the 61-year-old BMW driver did not realize that the 27-year-old Hyundai driver was driving slower than him and collided with the rear of his car. The BMW came to a stop in the second general eastbound lane while the Hyundai came to a stop on the outside paved shoulder facing westbound.

The BMW driver and his 19-year-old passenger were taken to hospital, while the Hyundai driver and his 24-year-old passenger died at the scene, FHP said. The 19-year-old later died in hospital and the 61-year-old's condition is currently unknown.

I-595 eastbound was closed for more than five hours before investigators reopened it around 10:20 a.m.

The circumstances that led to the crash are still being investigated.
