Max Verstappen only managed fifth place and Red Bull once again struggled to keep up with the faster cars ahead of them. His teammate Sergio Perezbut fought for the win for most of the race.

The Mexican outclassed his three-time world champion colleague and was close behind Leclerc on the penultimate lap of the race.

However, Perez collided with the resurgent Carlos Sainz at Turn 4, ending both drivers' participation in the race and ensuring that the afternoon ended effectively under safety car conditions.

Investigations against Perez

Now Perez could be in trouble because he was involved in the collision that ended the race and also damaged Red Bull’s chances of maintaining their narrow lead in the Constructors' Championship.

The FIA confirmed in an official document that Perez was summoned by the race stewards for an “alleged breach of Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2 d) of the International Sporting Code”.

Whether Perez will be found guilty of misconduct remains to be seen, but this section of the sporting code states that the maximum penalty for such violations would be disqualification from the race.

“Causing a collision, repeating serious errors or appearing to lack control of the vehicle (such as leaving the track) will be reported to the race stewards and may result in penalties up to and including disqualification of the driver concerned,” states the International Sporting Code.

In addition, Sainz was summoned before the race control, where the Ferrari driver could also face a penalty.

UPDATE: The FIA decided that neither driver would be penalized for the accident, describing it as a “racing accident.”
