Sam Darnold played arguably the best game of his NFL career last week in his debut for the Minnesota Vikings against the New York Giants, and he brought that confidence to his team's first home game on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

After his defense made a big stop on fourth down, Darnold was back at his own 3-yard line when head coach Kevin O'Connell decided to make a risky play that sent star receiver Justin Jefferson charging down the field.

So instead of creating more space with a shorter play, Darnold showed off his strong arm and threw the ball far forward to Jefferson, who was able to break away from his 49ers defenders.

Darnold's pass was beautiful and found Jefferson on the run for the big finish.

After the catch, however, Jefferson's agility and tremendous speed were on full display.

Jefferson aimed for the gold medal as he ran left, made a quick stop and sprinted toward the front right pylon as San Francisco defenders tried to wrestle him down.

But the 49ers couldn't do it, as Jefferson scored a 97-yard touchdown that completely shocked the 49ers.

This was the longest score for the Vikings as a team since 2008, when Bernard Berrian scored a 99-yard touchdown on a pass from Gus Frerotte.

Darnold was named the starter for the Vikings after rookie JJ McCarthy suffered a torn meniscus that will sideline him for the rest of the season, and O'Connell entrusted the veteran migrant worker with his powerful offense.

That was evident in Week 1 on the road against the Giants, when Darnold threw 19 of 24 passes for 208 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. And on one of those touchdown passes against New York, Darnold showed off his raw arm strength when he threw a ball to Jalen Nailor on the right sideline, even though he knew he was about to get hit by a defender.

But the arm strength of Darnold, the New York Jets' third pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, was never in question, and this bomb throw against Jefferson is just another example of that.

The Vikings defeated the powerful 49ers on Monday Night Football last season because San Fran quarterback Brock Purdy struggled to get going.

Darnold hopes to continue this trend, and plays like this one against Jefferson will be crucial to the big upset.
