Driver killed, Michigan State Police officer injured in accident

(CBS-DETROIT) — Motor Carrier Officer Daniel Kerstetter is taken off life support after Fatal accident on Friday on I-75 in Detroit.

Michigan State Police said the decision to take Kerstetter off life support depends on his family's final decision on whether to donate his organs.

Kerstetter, 45, joined the Michigan State Police in 2023.

The accident occurred at 8:30 a.m. on I-75 near Dix Highway in Lincoln Park. Kerstetter had stopped a semi-trailer for a traffic violation.

On the shoulder of the highway, Kerstetter's vehicle was hit from behind by a 38-year-old woman driving a Ford Explorer. According to police, she hit the median wall, continued driving on the highway and rammed the patrol car.

Kerstetter was sitting in the front seat of his vehicle and was wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred. He was trapped between his vehicle and the semi-trailer and had to be extricated from his vehicle.

The 38-year-old driver of the Explorer died in the accident. The driver of the semi-trailer truck was uninjured.

The police are still investigating the incident.
