Settlement reached in murder case of Dothan businessman

DOTHAN, Alabama (WTVY) – Mekhi Telfair, one of two defendants in the murder of a Dothan businessman, pleaded guilty last week as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

According to court records, Telfair, who initially faced the death penalty, was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Dothan police say he and Koston McWaters conspired to kill FedEx contractor Robert Blount over Labor Day weekend 2022.

Blount's girlfriend discovered his body early in the morning of September 4.

Testimony during a preliminary hearing indicated that Telfair, who had been attending a party with his girlfriend, became angry after hearing Blount use a racial slur during a phone conversation with her.

Investigators say McWaters, who is pending trial, drove with Telfair across town, where he shot Blount while McWaters waited nearby.
