Meryl Streep and Martin Short sit together at the 2024 Emmys after denying romance rumors

Meryl Streep and Martin Short stay close at the 2024 Emmy Awards.

Streep, 75, sat alongside her longtime friend Short at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 15, during the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, where the couple's show Only murders in the building received nominations in eight different categories.

The pair's joint appearance at the annual awards ceremony came months after representatives for 74-year-old Short denied rumors about the nature of his relationship with Streep after the two appeared particularly close at the 2024 Golden Globes in January.

At the time, a spokesperson for Short told PEOPLE that the two are “just very good friends, nothing more.” Short later denied those rumors on Bill Maher's podcast that same month, saying the two co-stars are “not a couple, we're just very close friends.”

In May, Short spoke about the interest in his relationship with Streep – who, according to PEOPLE, announced her separation from her husband of 45 years, Don Gummer, six years ago in October: “It's always interesting. Relationships in show business and speculation.”

Short and his Only murders co-star Steve Martin were each nominated for best lead actor in a comedy series on Sunday. Streep also received a nomination in the supporting actress category for her role in the series; Selena Gomez, Paul Rudd, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Matthew Broderick were among the other nominees for best actors from the hit Hulu series.

Although Streep and Short have denied a romantic relationship, the two were spotted holding hands at an after-party for the show's fourth season premiere in Los Angeles on August 22. Even then, a source told PEOPLE that the two were “just friends.”

On the same day The Hollywood Reporter also published an interview with Short in which, when asked about the status of their relationship, Short replied that he and Streep were “friends,” the outlet reported.
