Jelly Roll performs in the “In Memoriam” segment at the Emmys: “I Am Not Okay”

Jelly Roll made his Emmy debut on Sunday night (September 15), composing the soundtrack to the “In Memoriam” segment with his poignant song “I Am Not Okay.”

When the country singer took the stage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, he introduced his song — the Beautifully broken Single, which has so far peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 – with the words: “I believe that music is therapeutic. I believe that music can heal. I also believe that storytelling is just as cathartic. I hope that this song can be a healing moment for those who are mourning the storytellers we've lost this year. If you're feeling lost or alone tonight, I want you to know that it's OK to not always be OK.”

The Nashville star wore an all-black suit and stood center stage, with a string section behind him adding even more emotion to the song. The big screen behind Jelly Roll featured a number of famous names and faces we've lost this year, including Richard Simmons, Martin Mull, Shannen Doherty, Carl Weathers, Richard Lewis, Donald Sutherland and James Earl Jones, who passed away just last week at the age of 93.

The last name and face was Bob Newhart, who remained on screen as Jimmy Kimmel came on stage and quipped dryly: “And the award for the deceased industry professional we will miss the most goes to…” Kimmel then paid tribute to the comedian, whose 1960 project The conservative spirit of Bob Newhart was the first comedy album to reach number one on the Billboard 200.
