Former Saints player Steve Gleason stable after being taken to hospital as Hurricane Francine made landfall

Former New Orleans Saints safety Steve Gleason, who suffers from ALS, was stable after being hospitalized when Hurricane Francine hit Louisiana.

Gleason's family wrote in a post on his X account Thursday that he was taken to Ochsner Medical Center with the help of the New Orleans Fire Department.

“For anyone who asked, Steve was transported to Ochsner last night during the storm. He is now in stable condition. We want to thank the first responders at @NOLAFireDept and @NewOrleansEMS for reaching us under unsafe circumstances and the staff at @OchsnerHealth for providing immediate care,” the post read. “We will update everyone as soon as we know more. Thank you, the Gleason Crew.”

Gleason's spokeswoman Clare Durrett told ESPN the player had a fever and extremely low blood pressure and his doctor advised him to go to the hospital, but added that Francine was a Category 2 hurricane heading toward the state.

“They immediately stabilized him and took him to Ochsner,” Durrett told the outlet. “He's there and stable. He's continuing to receive treatment and we hope Steve does what Steve does and fights through it to get home as soon as possible.”

On Friday, Gleason's family released an update on the former player.

“ALS is a hurricane-scale disease, and on September 11, Hurricane ALS hit the country in the midst of Hurricane Francine, with power outages and spotty phone service.

“Thank you for the strong love and support from all of you.

“Celebrate this change to be alive and breathing.”

Gleason played seven seasons with the Saints from 2000 to 2006 and had a total of 71 tackles in 83 games.

In 2011, he announced that he was battling ALS. In 2019, he received the Congressional Gold Medal and earlier this year, the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
