Son of suspect accused of assassinating Donald Trump speaks about his “caring father”

The suspect in an alleged second assassination attempt on Donald Trump has been named by the FBI and his son has come forward.

Yesterday afternoon (Sunday, September 15), a man was arrested on suspicion of an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

The suspect has since been identified by several media outlets and now by the FBI as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh.

Now his son has spoken out.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung announced that there were “gunshots” in Trump’s “vicinity” around 2 p.m. as the former U.S. president played golf at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

In a post on Facebook, the Martin County Sheriff's Office said it had closed a major road and “stopped a vehicle and taken into custody a suspect believed to be connected to the alleged assassination.”

The 45th President of the United States said in a fundraising email that he was “fine and safe” and police confirmed that one person had been arrested. Officials believe that person was targeting Trump.

When officers searched the area, they discovered “an AK-47 rifle with a telescopic sight, two backpacks […] and a GoPro,” said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

The suspect has since been identified by the FBI as Ryan Wesley Routh and Routh's son has spoken out in support of his father.

Routh's son, Oran Routh, told CNN his father was not known for doing “anything crazy” or “violent.”

He continued: “Ryan is my father and I have no comment other than a character profile of him as a loving and caring father and an honest, hard-working man.

“I don't know what happened in Florida, and I hope things were just blown out of proportion, because from what little I've heard, it doesn't sound like the man I know would do anything crazy, let alone violent.

“He's a good father and a great man, and I hope you can portray him in an honest light.”

Social media posts from accounts apparently belonging to Ryan Routh reveal his support for Ukraine, and he even traveled to the country to support it after the Russian invasion.

In a phone call to The Guardian, the younger Routh added that his father had gone to the country and seen “damn people fighting and dying.”

“He… tried to make sure shit was cool and shit wasn't cool. In the meantime, this guy [Trump’s] He sits behind his damn desk and does nothing damned.”

As of this morning, no charges have been filed, but the FBI's investigation into the suspect and the alleged second murder attempt has now reached the entire world.

UNILAD has asked the FBI for comment.
