Steve Gleason posts thank you message from his hospital bed

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Saints legend Steve Gleason posted a message of gratitude from his hospital bed Saturday night (Sept. 14), calling members of his care team “heroes” for transporting him to Ochsner for emergency treatment on Wednesday during Hurricane Francine.

“It is in times of need that we find our heroes,” Gleason posted on X. “Some of our caregivers have been with me since 2011. They have been with us through good times and bad. They were in the ambulance with me on Wednesday when we crossed the chasm. They changed their daily plans to stay with me in the hospital and because of their service, I am the luckiest person on earth. Endless gratitude and love.”

Gleason, 47, was diagnosed in 2011 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease that causes a progressive loss of muscle control and response. There is no known cure.

Neither Gleason nor his team have released details of Wednesday's medical emergency, nor said how long he is expected to remain in the hospital.

In a separate X-post on Friday, Gleason called ALS “a disease in the form of a hurricane” that “made landfall” on his land on Wednesday when Francine caused widespread power outages in the greater New Orleans area.

Gleason encouraged his nearly 200,000 followers on X to “celebrate this opportunity to be alive and breathing.”

Gleason was later seen on Fox 8 enjoying the Saints' game against the Cowboys.
