Deadly collapse of a liquor store in Detroit • Tito Jackson dies • Investigation into Trump assassination attempt

Two people were killed in a serious accident at a liquor store in Detroit late Sunday.

Although it is not yet clear what exactly happened, several vehicles were hit at Prince Liquor on Gratiot near Harper before a vehicle drove into the building shortly before midnight.

“I just want to say I'm thankful to be alive,” Jasmine Martin said. “I was in the car and it happened so fast… the car came at high speed and flew over my car, hit my car and all I saw were dead bodies all over my car.”

Martin was on her way home from work when she stopped at the store and found herself in the middle of the fatal accident.

The coroner confirmed that two people were killed. It is unclear whether the dead were in the vehicle or were passers-by. Other injuries are unknown.

1 dead at Eastern Market

A brawl in Eastern Market after the Detroit Lions game ended in a shooting that left one man dead.

Detroit Police Chief James White said two men were fighting when an Oak Park man pulled out a gun and fired at least two shots near Shed 6, killing the man he was arguing with and injuring at least one other person around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

“We see this at fairs and social events – everyone has to have a gun, conflict resolution, lack of de-escalation, it's just ridiculous,” White said.

The shooter was quickly arrested by police officers who were on site due to gambling traffic and a party. Two weapons were seized at the scene.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson, is no longer with us,” his sons TJ, Taj and Taryll wrote in the statement alongside a photo with their father.

“We are shocked, saddened and heartbroken. Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being,” the statement continued.

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

Tito was 70.

Florida launches investigation into Trump assassination attempt

Governor Ron DeSantis said Sunday evening that the state of Florida will launch its own investigation into the alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his golf club in West Palm Beach.

A U.S. Secret Service agent spotted the muzzle of a gun protruding through a fence at Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach, where Trump was playing golf, and fired shots at the suspect, who then ran away and got into a vehicle.

The suspect was caught in a nearby district and taken into custody. An AK rifle, a rifle scope, backpacks and a camera were found along the fence, officials said.

“The State of Florida will conduct its own investigation into the attempted assassination at Trump International Golf Club,” DeSantis said in a post on X on Sunday evening.

“People have a right to know the truth about the potential assassin and how he was able to get within 500 feet of the former president and current Republican candidate,” he said.

Organs of MSP officer donated after fatal accident

The organs of a Michigan State Police trooper will be donated following an accident Friday on I-75 in Lincoln Park.

MSP said Sunday evening that Motor Carrier Officer (MCO) Dan Kerstetter is dependent on artificial devices to keep his organs available for donation.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” said Col. James F. Grady II, MSP director. “Traffic enforcement is dangerous work. The dedication of our traffic officers and patrol officers to keep the public safe on our roads is commendable and honorable. By choosing to give the gift of life, MC Officer Kerstetter continues to serve others even after his death.”

Kerstetter stopped a semi-trailer truck on the shoulder of the northbound side of the highway near Dix at around 8:40 a.m. He was in his patrol car when he was struck from behind by another driver.

According to police, the other driver first hit the median barrier and continued driving on the highway before colliding with the patrol car. The other driver was killed.
