You should update your iPhone to iOS 18. Here's how to download it

Apple is releasing iOS 18 to users today and you can access new features, both big and remappable control center and home screen– and small – like Activation Lock. Don't expect Apple Intelligence to be available immediately. Those who hate using yet another boring AI art generator might be grateful for some relief, even if only temporary.

If you already have iOS 17 installed, you should receive a notification about the update soon. Some of us at Gizmodo already have our updates on their devices. The update will be rolled out to iPhone users in stages. You will need a iPhone8 or higher to get the update. These are the phones with the A12 Bionic chip or higher.

The update requires users to have between 5GB and 10GB of additional storage on their phones. If you need to delete something, you will be given the option during the update, or you can go to Settings app, then press Generally, and go to iPhone storage.

To find out if you are ready for an update, go to your Settings app, then scroll down to Generally. Next, press Software update and wait until the phone tells you whether your phone is ready for the iOS 18 update. You can install the update later when the device is connected or on the spot. Just follow the instructions and you're good to go. However, please note that this will require a restart of the phone.

For all Apple Intelligence features you need an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone16 announced last week at Glowtime. However, you won't see most or any of these AI features at launch on September 20. Apple hinted that we might get them in October, but if you want to try out a few additional AI features, you'll have to opt into the iOS 18 developer beta. However, keep in mind that you may not get all the latest features in iOS 18, and you may experience more glitches when trying out iOS 18.1.

The update will also be available to anyone who owns an iPhone SE 2nd or 3rd generation. The full list of compatible iPhones includes:

In addition, macOS 15 Sequoia and iPadOS 18 are coming out today. iPads get a host of new features, including the same Control Center and Home screen customizability as iOS 18. There are also updated Notes and Calculator apps that interpret handwritten math formulas and solve them for you. My favorite feature of the latest Mac update is now easy iPhone mirroring. You'll want to make sure both devices are fully updated before trying it out.
