Isolated showers and thunderstorms, risk of isolated flash floods: Forecast for Sunday evening, 15.09.2024

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue through the night and into Monday. Showers may cause isolated flash flooding, especially in low-lying and urban areas. Temperatures will only drop to just above 21 degrees by tonight thanks to persistent rain and cloud cover. For the same reason, highs on Monday will only be between just above 27 degrees and just above 28 degrees. Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will be possible throughout the day, with the best chances in the afternoon and evening. The risk of surf backwash remains low at our local beaches. Tuesday will bring more scattered showers, but rain chances will decrease late Tuesday and Wednesday as the front and low pressure system drift south out of the area. As rain chances decrease and we have much more sunshine to end the week, highs will climb back up to around 32 degrees by Friday. In the tropics, we continue to track Gordon and potential Tropical Cyclone Eight. Gordon is a tropical depression and is located several hundred miles east of the Windward and Leeward Islands. The strength of the cyclone will fluctuate and it will eventually move northward. It poses no threat to our area. The other area to watch is the Georgia coast and the Carolinas, and it is now a potential Category 8 tropical cyclone. It is expected to bring heavy rains that may cause flooding, especially near the coast, and gusty winds and rough surf are likely along parts of the east coast. It also poses no threat to the News 5 area or the Gulf Coast. The WKRG News 5 First Alert Storm Team is covering parts of southeast Mississippi, southwest Alabama and northwest Florida.
