Honduran man residing illegally in Arkansas arrested over woman's death

PULASKI COUNTY, Ark. (KAIT) – A Honduran man who was “illegally present in Arkansas” has faced multiple charges after killing a woman in a head-on collision, according to state police.

Arkansas State Police arrested 30-year-old Maynor Yair Sorto-Herrera on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter.

According to a press release from the Department of Public Safety, the charges stem from an accident that occurred at 5:44 a.m. on Arch Street in Pulaski County on Sunday, September 8.

According to ASP, Sort-Herrera was traveling southbound when his 2008 Ford F-150 entered the northbound lanes and collided with a 2016 Honda CRV driven by 48-year-old Jennifer Ann Morton of Little Rock.

According to ASP, Morton was a respiratory therapist in the infant and toddler unit at Arkansas Children's Hospital.

When police arrived, they reported that Sorto-Herrera had left the scene.

He was taken to UAMS for treatment and later transported to the Pulaski County Detention Center where he was charged with the following:

  • Negligent homicide
  • battery
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Violation of the law on concealed carrying of weapons
  • Reckless driving
  • Driving without a license
  • Failure to stop after a fatal accident
  • Other traffic violations

According to ASP, Sorto-Herrera is a native of Honduras and lives illegally in Alexander.

The US Border Patrol arrested him near Laredo, Texas, in October 2018 and sent him back to Honduras on November 5, 2018, the press release said.

“It is unclear when he returned to the United States,” the press release said, adding that he is being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
