A Mount Prospect man was killed on Thursday (September 12) when his motorcycle went off the road.

According to police, Mount Prospect officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle in the 900 block of S. Elmhurst Road (Route 83) around 9:40 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found an unoccupied motorcycle in the front yard and the seriously injured driver in a nearby driveway.

The lone motorcyclist was identified as 22-year-old Alexis Martinez, 908 S. Elmhurst Rd., Mount Prospect.

Firefighters took Martinez to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he later died.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Martinez was traveling south on Elmhurst Road from Sunset Road when he lost control of the motorcycle, police said. The motorcycle left the road and Martinez was ejected from the motorcycle.

Martinez was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said. Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene, investigators believe speed and mechanical problems contributed to the crash.

Elmhurst Road was closed between Sunset Road and Golf Road and reopened at about 1:20 a.m. The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy is pending.
