Man accused of double murder calls for his lawyer to be fired from council – WCHS Network | News • Sports • Business

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A man accused of a double murder in Kanawha County is assigned a new public defender.

Markus Guy, 32, of Charleston, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend's mother and brother in February, appeared before Kanawha County District Judge Maryclaire Akers on Monday to request a new attorney for his case.

Judge Akers accepted Guy's request for a new attorney, who was previously Kanawha County Public Defender Zoe Shavers. She then appointed him defense attorney Ed Bowman, but not before first asking some questions about why he no longer wanted Shavers on his bar.

“Mr. Guy, I'm not sure if you know what I know, and I'm sure you probably don't know it either, but the Kanawha County Public Defender's Office has some of the best criminal defense attorneys there are. Mrs. Shavers, sitting here next to you, is one of them,” Akers said.

Guy stated that he was unhappy with the work being done on his case and that the discovery process was taking too long. He was not sure if he would want to hand the case over to another defense attorney if it continued like this.

“If I call and try to get someone to come in and talk to me and nobody comes – I've been preparing my disclosure for over a month and nobody has come to talk to me about my disclosure or go through what we're going to do for the process – if that's what it's going to be like, then no, I don't want anyone,” Guy said.

Akers said appointing a new attorney for Guy could cause the trial to take even longer.

“Mr. Guy, this may cause a delay in your trial and I want you to understand that before we proceed, the trial date is set for December, so, as you know, it is now September,” Akers said.

Guy's trial was originally scheduled for December 2. It is not yet clear whether it will be postponed.

Guy pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder before Judge Akers in August.

He is accused of killing 39-year-old Alisha Carnifax and 14-year-old Koda Jarrett in their St. Albans home on February 7. After Guy and his girlfriend Shelby Frazier reported their deaths, officials found the bodies, which were confirmed to have been shot multiple times.

The guy remains in the South Central Regional Jail without bail.
