Suspected impairment in fatal accident on I-10 in Chandler

CHANDLER, AZ (AZFamily) — A driver was killed after a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in Chandler Sunday afternoon. Investigators believe driver impairment was a factor in the crash.

It happened around 3 p.m. on I-10 northbound, just south of the Ray Road exit. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a Mercedes-Benz sedan failed to brake for traffic in time and collided with a GMC Yukon, pushing that SUV into a Chevrolet sedan.

The driver of the Yukon was taken to a hospital where he died a short time later. His name was not released.

No one else was injured.

Witnesses told troopers that the driver of the Mercedes was driving recklessly shortly before the crash. According to DPS, the driver, a 58-year-old woman from Phoenix, showed signs of impairment and was arrested at the scene.

Although she was taken into custody, she was not taken to jail, according to DPS. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office will review the case for possible prosecution. DPS did not identify the suspect.

The crash remains under investigation.
