Titans coach Brian Callahan angry about Will Levis’ ridiculous turnover – “That was stupid”

The second year of the Will Levis era in Tennessee produces some early low points for the clip reel.

In Week 1, the “Surrender Cobra Moment” occurred after Levis threw a late pick-6 to seal the loss to the Chicago Bears.

Week 2 produced one of the worst turnovers of the early season and drew the ire of head coach Brian Callahan from the sidelines. The Titans eventually fell to 0-2, losing 24-17 to the New York Jets.

Levis' Titans led 7-0 in the second quarter and Tennessee threatened to take a two-point lead. Levis capitalized on a shotgun snap from the 6-yard line on third down and goal.

The Jets' pass rushers were under pressure and Levis went through the pocket to avoid a sack, but he stumbled – and then panicked. As he fell to the turf, Levis threw a backward shovel pass toward running back Tyjae Spears – a decision that predictably did not end well.

Spears was unable to catch the ball, it bounced off his hands and landed on the turf. Jets linebacker Quincy Williams eventually secured it and scored a turnover.

Then the CBS cameras caught Callahan's reaction on the sidelines, as you would expect. Probably the best guess among amateur lip readers as to what Callahan said to Levis was something like, “What the hell are you doing?”

After the game Callahan did not hide his disappointment with his second-year quarterback, telling reporters“I was upset. It was stupid,” Callahan said. “It was the exact same thing he did last week and he cost us points in the red zone.”

Levis could only look at the turf in response. What looked like a safe two-possession lead ended with the Jets taking possession. Fortunately for the Titans, New York did not convert. The Jets' ensuing attack ended in a three-and-out.

But on the Titans' next play, Levis lost the ball again. This time he threw a long ball into double coverage that was intercepted by cornerback Brandin Echols. And this time the Jets converted the ball, driving it 73 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 7-7.
