Fonner Park murder convict appeals

GRAND ISLAND, Nebraska (KSNB) – The man convicted in 2023 of killing a horseback rider in Fonner Park is appealing his conviction and sentence.

Logan Hunts Horse, 21, was found guilty of second-degree murder and a weapons offense in connection with the killing of 62-year-old Todd Scherer at a horse stable in Fonner Park in March 2023. In July, he was sentenced to a minimum of 64 years in prison.

He filed an appeal with the Nebraska Court of Criminal Appeals in August. According to court records, he will argue that his case was mishandled during three hearings and plans to appeal the July 30 sentencing hearing.

The appeals court said he had until October 10 to file a brief contesting the case.

In July, a judge sentenced Hunts Horse, of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, to 88 to 134 years in prison for first-degree murder and using a deadly weapon to commit a felony. The judge ordered that he must spend at least 64 years in prison before being eligible for parole.

On March 9, 2023, 62-year-old Todd Scherer of Lincoln was killed at a horse stable in Fonner Park. Police said Hunts Horse admitted to shooting Scherer in the stomach with a handgun. He then left the scene and later returned. When he returned, he found Scherer still alive and then beat him to death with a baseball bat.
