Michigan Masonic Home reports possible security incident

ALMA, Michigan (WNEM) – Michigan Masonic Home said it is sending notifications about a possible security incident.

Michigan Masonic Home stated that it recently became aware of suspicious activity related to an employee email account. The investigation revealed that there was unauthorized access to the affected email account from May 28, 2024, to July 18, 2024.

The company is not aware of any misuse of the information and the email is secure. As a precaution, letters have been sent to potentially affected persons.

The Michigan Masonic Home said in a statement:

“While the data review is ongoing, preliminary findings indicate that the following types of information may have been impacted: names and credit card numbers, dates of birth, bank account information, government-issued identification numbers, driver's license information, medical information including, but not limited to, lab results, medical history information, treatment information, patient numbers, medical record numbers, prescription information and diagnostic information, health insurance information, and social security numbers. In addition, Michigan Masonic Home goes to great lengths to protect the customer information entrusted to it. As part of its ongoing commitment to the security of the information entrusted to it, Michigan Masonic Home continues to review its privacy policies and procedures.”

“The notification letters sent to affected individuals will urge potentially affected individuals to remain vigilant for identity theft and fraud, to review bank statements, credit reports and statements of benefits for suspicious activity, and to report suspicious activity immediately. The notification also includes additional information on how to obtain a free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus by www.annualcreditreport.comby phone at 877-322-8228 or directly at the three major credit bureaus at: Equifax, PO Box 105069, Atlanta, GA, 30348, 1-800-685-1111, www.equifax.com; Experian, PO Box 2002, Allen, TX 75013, 888-397-3742, www.experian.com; TransUnion, PO Box 2000, Chester, PA 19016, 800-680-7289, www.transunion.com.”

“Potentially affected individuals can also find information about identity theft, fraud alerts, credit freezes, and the steps they can take to protect their information by contacting their credit reporting agencies, the Federal Trade Commission, or their state's attorney general. The Federal Trade Commission can be reached at: 600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20580; www.identitytheft.gov; 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338); and TTY: 1-866-653-4261. Known or suspected cases of identity theft should also be reported to law enforcement or the appropriate state Attorney General.
