Man now charged with premeditated murder of Melissa Jubane; pleads not guilty

A Washington County grand jury has indicted a man accused of killing 32-year-old Beaverton nurse Melissa Jubane on a charge of first-degree murder, upgraded to second-degree murder, according to an indictment unsealed Monday.

Bryce Schubert, 27, is also charged with first-degree kidnapping and second-degree desecration of a corpse.

Schubert pleaded not guilty to all charges at his arraignment on Monday, appearing via video link from the Washington County Jail.

The courtroom was full and many people were emotionally upset during Schubert's court appearance.

Jubane was reported missing earlier this month when she failed to show up for work. Two days later Schubert arrested and found Jubane's body.

Schubert lived in the same apartment complex as Jubane and was also a nurse, but not at the same medical center.

Jubane was killed less than two weeks after her wedding in August. She worked at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland.

Authorities have released few details about the case, and the court has sealed a probable cause affidavit that provides further details.

The public prosecutor's office said on Monday that it is common practice in murder cases and high-profile cases to keep such court documents under seal.

Schubert is being held without bail.

His next court date is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15.
