Two sisters fight for their lives after being hit by a car in Glendale

GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) – Two sisters are fighting for their lives after being struck by a car while crossing 59th Avenue near Greenway Road in Glendale Friday night.

Glendale police said the girls, 12-year-old Kaliyah Reyes and 14-year-old Delilah Marquez, were walking in the middle of a block near 59th Avenue and Greenway Road when they were struck by a motorist.

The driver remained at the scene and will not face charges, according to police.

Frank Madrid, the girls' uncle, said the sisters were walking home from a soccer game when the accident happened.

“Life can change in an instant, we all know that. We do our best to protect our children, we do our best, and sometimes there are just things we can't change, no matter how hard we try,” he said.

Madrid said Kaliyah is currently clinging to life support, but the family is preparing for the worst. He added that Delilah was in a coma for three days after the accident, but woke up on Monday and was showing signs of improvement.

On Monday evening, friends and family gathered at the scene of the accident to light candles, share memories and pray for Delilah and Kaliyah.

“We thought, what if no one showed up, what if only immediate family was there. We were really scared, but the fact that so many people came is so heartwarming. This is a great community,” said Delilah and Kaliyah's cousin Cassandra Marquez.

A GoFundMe campaign has been started for the family.
