Three of the six accused boys must stand trial

Three of the six boys accused of killing an Uber driver in Omaha appeared in court Tuesday. Two brothers, 17-year-old Trenton Titsworth-Hunt and 16-year-old Dasean Titsworth-Hunt, waived their preliminary hearing. 14-year-old Joseph Keyes did not. Those three and 16-year-old Talan Wilson are all being charged as adults in the shooting death of 64-year-old Mursal Jama. The other two suspects are not being named because they are being charged as juveniles. Legally, they are too young to be charged as adults. They are 13 and 11. Frodyma said on surveillance video, you can hear screaming and then a gunshot. Jama later died in the hospital. “You hear a distinctive gunshot and you see several of the juveniles backing away, approaching quickly,” Frodyma said. “These juveniles turned and ran toward the garage. They jumped into a vehicle belonging to the victim and left the scene.” About 15 minutes after Frodyma arrived at the scene, he was notified of a chase from Cass County. Douglas County Prosecutor Don Kleine said the teens were traveling at over 120 mph. “Obviously they were chased through Otoe County, Cass County, Sarpy County, Douglas County and ended up at 46th and L Street. Then they jumped out of the vehicle,” Kleine said. “It was extremely chaotic.” Investigators said two guns were recovered after at least four teens were taken into custody. The other two were taken into custody days later. When phones were seized, Frodyma said, GPS tracking and videos of the teens with guns helped tie everything together. “When you see things like this happening and very young people stealing guns and they're showing them off on video, pointing them at each other and walking around with them, it's extremely disturbing,” Kleine said. Frodyma said the group is connected to the McGills gun store robbery in Nebraska City. That's where investigators confirmed the pursuit began because the teens returned to the gun store. Frodyma said nine guns were originally stolen and to date, five have been recovered by police. The three teens have been arraigned. Wilson's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 27. Homicide investigator Chad Frodyma gave a detailed account of the night of August 13. He spoke on the witness stand for more than 30 minutes, describing how Keyes was connected to a series of crimes he committed with a gang of five other teenagers.

“The group of six met sometime after 7:45 p.m.,” Frodyma said.

He said the teens were caught on video attempting to rob two men at the QuikTrip on the corner of 120th and Dodge.

At around 10:55 p.m., the group approached a man and demanded that he hand over his car keys.

After the robbery, investigators said, the teens abducted Jama in a carjacking attack in his garage near 94th Street and Cady Court.

Frodyma said surveillance video showed screams and then a gunshot. Jama later died in hospital.

“You hear a distinctive gunshot and see several of the juveniles who were rapidly approaching back away,” Frodyma said. “These juveniles turned and ran toward the garage. They jumped into a vehicle belonging to the victim and left the scene.”

About 15 minutes after Frodyma arrived at the scene, he was notified of a chase from Cass County. Douglas County Prosecutor Don Kleine said the teens were traveling at over 120 miles per hour.

“Apparently they were chased through Otoe County, Cass County, Sarpy County and Douglas County and ended up at the corner of 46th Street and L Street. Then they jumped out of the vehicle,” Kleine said. “It was extremely chaotic.”
