I-70 eastbound closed in Glenwood Canyon; no expected reopening

The driver of a semi-truck was hospitalized Tuesday morning after being injured in a rollover crash that closed Interstate 70 in both directions in Glenwood Canyon.

Westbound I-70 reopened shortly before 1 p.m., but the eastbound freeway remains closed between exit 121 for Grizzly Creek and exit 125 for Hanging Lake. CDOT officials said.

The tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on I-70 when it overturned and crashed over the barrier from the upper level of the highway to the lower level eastbound, said Trooper Sherri Mendez of the Colorado State Patrol.

In Glenwood Canyon, the westbound lanes of I-70 were built one level higher than the eastbound lanes to protect the canyon floor, according to Gruen Associates, the interstate's designer.
