13-year-old arrested after attempted car theft in West Seattle

A 13-year-old boy was arrested last month after an attempted carjacking in West Seattle.

On August 30, officers responded to a report of a car theft by a group of juveniles near South Holgate Street and 31st Avenue South.

According to Seattle police, when officers arrived at the scene, they found one of the suspects left behind by his accomplices.

The officers also arrested a passerby who was armed with a weapon.

Investigators said the car owner spotted the suspects in her car as they attempted to steal it. Passersby and witnesses confronted the suspects, who got out of the car but left a cellphone behind.

The suspect returned to get the phone and attacked one of the participants while a bystander fired shots at the suspects' getaway car.

Police said the suspects drove away but left the 13-year-old boy behind. The boy was arrested for attempted car theft.

The bystander who fired his weapon was also arrested for pointing or discharging a firearm, but was released from custody at the scene.

The other suspects were not arrested by the police and are still at large.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story misstated the child's age. Seattle police have since corrected the information in their original police report.
