George, Iowa – The George Meat Locker was damaged in a fire in George on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

According to George Deputy Fire Chief Josh Eben, firefighters were called around 12:30 p.m.

The deputy chief says firefighters noticed smoke and fire in the smoker's chimney as they approached the scene. He says they determined the fire started in the smoker (inside the building). He says they conducted an interior attack and then ventilated the building.

According to Assistant Chief Eben, no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Little Rock Fire Department.

He says the cause of the fire appears to have been grease deposits.

Assistant Chief Eben reports that there was no damage to the building, but some meat was lost in and near the smoker and there was smoke damage to the building.

He says firefighters were on site for about an hour and a half.
