As far as love stories go, Stephen and Tess had a meet-cute moment that could have been seen in a teen romantic comedy. The two first met in the summer of 2016 when they were both starting their freshman year at Pennsylvania State University. Back then, they had a lot in common—including the fact that they both competed in gymnastics for the varsity.

“We met on our first day at Penn State,” Tess said TODAY.com. “He was a gymnast on the Penn State men's team and I was on the Penn State women's gymnastics team, so we went to athlete orientation together.”

Stephen spoke with Access to Hollywood in July 2024 about her first meeting with Tess and told how they bonded over similar likes and dislikes.

“I thought, 'Ah, this girl seems cool,'” he said at the time. “She's a little weird, just like me, so we hit it off… We became friends right away and just kept talking. Within a week, we were basically a couple.”

The couple stayed together through college and continued to compete in gymnastics. While Tess eventually retired from the sport in 2020, Stephen wanted to further his career. They eventually settled in Sarasota, Florida, so Stephen could train there full-time.

As for how they celebrate their love, both Stephen and Tess are open about their relationship. They often share private moments with their social media followers and offer heartfelt tributes when the time is right. Additionally, they support each other, as fans saw when Tess went to the Olympics to watch Stephen compete.

“Happiness is when all your dreams come true ❤️,” she wrote in a romantic message on Instagram on August 4. “Ever since I knew you, you were absolutely certain that you would one day be an Olympian and to see that dream come true this week is a feeling that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Stephen, you are the best partner, athlete and role model. I can't wait to see what life has in store for you next and I will be right by your side every moment 🥰.”

Has Stephen's new fame affected his relationship with Tess? It doesn't seem so! She is there to support her boyfriend in California (along with her cat, Kyushu) while preparing for the competition Dancing with the stars Season 33.

“She's already with me in LA,” he said E! News Beginning of September 2024. “And we brought the kitten with us. We have furnished the whole house, we feel comfortable.”

In the same interview, Tess spoke emotionally about how important it was to be by his side all the time. “We're there for each other. We never get sick of each other,” she added. “We don't feel like we need a break like that. I think that's really helped us over the last eight years – it's just kept us together. And it's been a great time.”

Well, this couple certainly deserves a gold medal in love!
