Man arrested after three people were shot in his home near Lodi in June

A 25-year-old man was arrested after three people were found shot to death in a home near Lodi June, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said. Steve Guerrero Jr. is charged with murder and burglary with a firearm, the sheriff's office said Monday. Officers discovered the victims' bodies in what San Joaquin Sheriff Pat Withrow described as a “gruesome sight” after being called to a welfare check at the East Mettler Road home around 6:30 p.m. on June 8. The sheriff's office identified the three as a mother, father and their 45-year-old son. Their names are 60-year-old Joe Pena, 69-year-old Kim Huynh and 45-year-old Alfred Nguyen. Family members said they had not been able to reach the three for a week. Investigators believed it was a targeted shooting and did not inform the media about it so as not to “compromise the integrity of the investigation,” the sheriff's office said on Facebook. Withrow also would not specify how they were able to link Guerrero to the crimes, but reiterated that they were “very confident” he committed them. “We were able to quickly gather some evidence that showed this was not a random act, and it appeared to us to be a targeted act of violence, and it was committed by someone who knew the family,” Withrow said. It is not known how Guerrero knew the family. When asked if a gun was found at the scene, Withrow said, “I cannot answer that at this time.” Guerrero was arrested on Sept. 14 and faces three charges of murder, burglary and possession of a weapon, Withrow said. He is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Details of what the man stole were not disclosed. Withrow said at the arraignment that prosecutors would go through all of the charges against Guerrero and determine which ones they want to pursue.
